Academic qualifications

• PhD, University of Reading, 1997. I researched the evolution and development of early vertebrates, focusing on the homeobox genes of the lamprey and amphioxus, in the lab of Peter Holland. Thesis title: Gene duplication in vertebrate evolution (available from Ethos at the British Library).
• BA, Cambridge University, class 2i, 1992. Natural sciences, specialising in zoology (developmental biology, cell biology and animal biology).

• SfEP training courses in on-screen editing (levels 1 and 2) and editing medical texts.
• Publishing Training Centre courses on advanced copyediting, rewriting and writing and editing for the web

Professional memberships

• Advanced Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP; 2010). Membership requires proof of a high degree of competence and substantial experience as an editor, including evidence of training and experience and references from clients.
